Brm Watch
These days, people do not think twice about the watch that they wear on their arm. Whether it is a simple dollar special digital watch from the flea market or a BRM watch from a specialist shop, people just assume to know what time it is wherever they go. But many people forget that time was not always so easy to keep track of in the long history of humanity. The innovations of the modern wristwatch have only been around for about a century and its predecessor – the pocket watch – only really came about some four hundred years ago. For a long time people have had to come up with innovative and interesting ways to note the passage of time.
The sundial is probably one of the most well known ancient timepieces in the world. While it is no BRM watch, the sundial was one of the most reliable items in the world simply because the sun never fails to shine. The principle of the sundial is actually quite simple. An upright piece is attached to a disc that is marked with numbers or increments. As the sun moves across the sky, the upright piece casts a shadow on the disc and the shadow indicates the approximate time of day. The obvious disadvantage of this method was that it only worked during the day but it also had to be recalibrated as seasons changed to take into consideration the different angles that the sun shines from around the world.
Even before the sundial, however, people did not so much tell time as simply mark the passing time. This was important for various reasons and professions like alchemy and early medicine. There were numerous items that served as timekeeping devices: the water clock and the time candle. The water clock worked by allowing water to drip out of a container at a steady rate. By checking the level of the water a person could determine how much time has passed. The candle worked on the same basic principle with the candle being marked in increments. As the candle burned down, a person could not how much time has passed. These items are far cries from the sleek, modern BRM watch you can get today, but they sufficed and people used them for centuries.
When clockwork clocks became perfected
in about the 15th century, people finally thought about shrinking
the size of the gears. This, in turn, lead to the pocket watch that
was used for a long time until someone decided to move the watch
from the pocket to the wrist. From these beginnings the modern BRM
watch and many other makes were born and are considered a normal
part of most people’s accessories in every day life. While
the watches today look much different than the old ones and last
much longer without having to be wound they still serve the same
purpose – to tell the time when you need to know it.
